Bring Your Own Tech or Device to School - A BYOD Explanation

Should you allow your children to bring their own technology or devices to school? Well many children already carry expensive smartphones, so why not let them use these powerful tools to help with their education?

Below are two great videos which help explain the benefits students will have using technology:

BYOT For Parents by Amy Mayer

BYOD in the 21st Century:

This second video is a little more entertaining and created by a Canadian named Marc-Andre Lalande

Challenges:

When doing research on BYOT I came across The State of Tech Podcast.  During this podcast several technology specialists share their successes and challenges with 'Bring Your own Technology' programs.

The successes and positives they mention in the podcast are similar to those mentioned in the videos above.  The three major challenges they mention in the podcast are 1) The distractions tech can cause 2) Broken devices and 3) Equality, meaning not everyone will have similar devices, and some won't have any devices.

We hope to overcome the first challenge, distractions, by giving students clear guidelines and rules.  Hopefully with students focused on learning how to use their technology we will have less distractions, and they will be more engaged in their work.

The second challenge, keeping devices safe, we will address by discussing safe practices, and by recommending cases and screen protectors for all devices. The last challenge, equality, is the hardest to overcome.  We will do our best to provide all students with technology. Luckily, the staff are doing a great job at acquiring new technology via grants and bursaries.

There are more challenges to face than these three, but despite this, we believe that the challenges can be overcome, and the advantages greatly outweigh the disadvantages.

BYOT Conclusion:

By allowing your child to bring their technology to class we will be able to teach them how to use it to enhance their education, and prepare them for the twenty first century.  They will be able to be more creative and participate in engaging inquiry based and project based lessons.  Thank you for your consideration, and please contact me if you have any questions.  You can call me at the school or email me via the link here.
