Investigation of Poverty

Social Studies 7 Outcome: 7.2.2

Step One:

Please find a definition of poverty and poverty cycle. Place these in your chapter four vocabulary.

Step Two:

If you haven't already please watch the following video: Poverty Cycle

Following issues are related to poverty:

Landlessness (no land to live on)
Unemployment (no job)
Size of families (Too many children to support)
Illiteracy or lack of education (Can't read)
Poor health/malnutrition (people are sick)

• Landlessness (no land to live on) :In many places land has been taken away from people by wealthy investors.  This means that the poorer people will not be able to have create farms to support themselves.  It also means that people are unable to afford housing and basic shelter. Development organisations, we are extremely concerned about this and frequently hear firsthand accounts from the communities with which we work in clamouring for protection.  Although a vital economic resource, land is, for humanity, much more than a productive asset: it has also a social, cultural, spiritual and environmental function. Find more related info here.

• Unemployment (no job): Do your best to explain this using your own words.

• Size of families (Too many children to support): We know increase in number of children increases likelihood of poverty -more mouths to feed-more constraints for working at a job (child care, etc.)
Often poor families in developing countries actually have more children because some of their children will die from disease or malnutrition. Find more related information here.

Illiteracy or lack of education (Can't read) This relates to unemployment.  Do your best to explain it on your PowerPoint.

• Poor health/malnutrition (people are sick): Think about the farmer in the video we watched.

Step Three: Below is also the Criteria you will be marked on...

1) Create a PowerPoint presentation with each of the points above as one slide.

2) On each slide explain how each of the points above contribute to the cycle of poverty.

3) Include images on each slide please, and at least three sentences of explanation as to how each point contributes to the poverty cycle.
